All Her Fault

All Her Fault tells the story of mother who's young son mysteriously vanishes. The series takes place in the City of Chicago but filmed almost exclusively in Melbourne, Australia. But by using virtual production, the project used 360 degree driving plates to accurately represent the story locations.

A virtual production grounded in reality.
When you have a story that takes place in a real city like Chicago, it can be a real challenge when your production needs to shoot on the other side of the world, like Australia. So how can you use virtual production to make that story feel real to the audience? For All Her Fault, the Critics Choice winning series from Peacock, creating high resolution 360 video driving plates would allow the team to film realistic driving scenes that were critical for taking the cast of characters around the key places in the story.

We worked closely with the team to capture the super high resolution driving plates with a special 360 camera system called the Meta 3. These custom engineered camera arrays are able to record the environment around them up to 20K x 10K. We highly recommended this capture format for recording a very high resolution image with perfect frame sync between all of the camera's perfect for 360 degree driving plates.

Our team used Mistika VR to stitch all of the driving plates together. Stitching is a process where we convert the fisheye images from the camera and blend them together in a seamless format. This is a critical step in successful 360 driving plates, which removes any visible differences between cameras and allows for the production team complete freedom to film in any direction on the virtual production stage.

The next step in our process was to stabilize each shot using Syntheyes. While the camera system was mounted on a heavy duty gimbal, there were still micro-vibrations and drifting that needed to be corrected. By utilizing supervised tracking we could remove those problems and create a stable image.

Finally we completed our composting and final cleanup in Fusion, the powerful compositing tool found in DaVinci Resolve. This step allowed us to clean up any final issues and polish each shot to pixel perfect state to export to the virtual production team at Nant Studios.
